They met on a log over a stream,

Robin told him to move. John had cut a staff that morning and no particular interest in being told anything by a stranger with a bow. They went at it over the water until Robin came off worst and went in.

Robin lost that fight. Then he asked the man who beat him to come along, which is the only genuinely clever thing anybody does in the whole story.

Everything after that, John was there for. The winters. The ambushes that went wrong. The long walk home carrying somebody who could not walk it himself. He is in almost none of the songs and behind very nearly all of them.

A chain named after Robin Hood was always going to need him eventually.
